If someone asks, "what do you do?" How would you respond?

A great question - to which our answer is: We list and sell residential real estate.  In this market a large portion of our business is helping homeowners who are "under water" avoid foreclosure by successfully short selling their home.

What do you do

I know, it's a strange question, because we all know what WE ourselves do (real estate).  We help people buy and sell houses, right?  Hmmmm....

Seriously though, if someone asked you what you do...  Do you really know how to respond in a way that could possibly lead to a new client?  Or do you fumble through some half baked explanation of what we do or think we do...  All the while, the person on the other end had lost interest in what we were saying, then we kick ourselves the rest of the day with what we SHOULD have said...

Think about it...  What exactly would you say right now to that question?  That you are a Realtor?  That you are in Real Estate?  What would you possibly say?  Something like you help people achieve their dreams or help investors, etc...    Again, not what you would want to say or what you should say...  What I mean Is, what would you say exactly...  Word for word...

Take out a pen and a piece of paper right now and write it out.  What you would say if someone asked you that right now.  Can you do it?  If you cannot do it, then how do you expect yourself to react when someone asks you what you do the next time you are out in the field? Sometimes we don't get second chances in the game of real estate.

In our minds we so often know what we want to say, but when actually faced with the time when we need to say something, we don't have the words to say.  Like meeting that perfect someone on the street...  Okay, not on the street...  How about that perfect someone in a coffee shop, and you felt from your head to your toes that they were someone you wanted to get to know better.  It felt right, it felt perfect...  BUT, you waited and they walked away never to been seen again.  Or worse, someone else started up a conversation with them and they walked out the door with your Mr/Miss right.  Kinda like that.  Afterwards you think about all the things you COULD have said, or SHOULD have said, but DIDN'T.

Now look back at your response that you have written...  Is it a complete sentence that can be used in a conversation?  Is it just a jumble of ideas that you would like to use when this opportunity presents itself?   Is it about you, and how awesome you are?  Or is it about THEM, and what you can do for them.  Remember, people don't really care about where you work, or your awesomeness...  What they want to feel is that your awesomeness is going to assist them, so don't forget to round the sentence back to how it will benefit them.  Once you have this down, it is time to memorize, internalize and learn how to customize it.

Share with me what you would say if someone asked you the question, "What do you do".  I will give you my honest feedback, as well as others that comment on this post.  J

Remember, when opportunity knocks...  It's too late for preparation!
