The Price of Spam

Spam

How much does SPAM cost?  Well - let's flip that around.

How much can SPAM BLOCKING COST YOUR BUSINESS?

Yesterday I sent out an RFP to just over 220 candidates that appeared to offer the skill set we need for an upcoming project.  The emails were sent out using Top Producer and were personalized to each recipient.

Of that - 18 "bounce" messages arrived so far.  Six are invalid email addresses - the rest have been REJECTED by the email system the business owner uses.

They will never see the RFP.

They have missed an opportunity to compete for approximately $12,000 in revenue.

There are plenty of the candidates who did receive the RFP and who are already engaging in the process.

So - do you know whether your email system is preventing legitimate emails from reaching you?

If not - don't you think it just might be wise to find out?

Spam filters are very good at catching spam but sometimes they also catch "good" e-mails. I always take a quick look at the subject lines and sender names before deleting spam messages . . ..  .

Raj - I'm with you there...but what about the emails that never make it to you because your email provider blocks them upstream?

Hi Tony, yes spam filters can be both a blessing and a curse. I've had the same thing happen to me even tho emails sent out were to people who had requested to be on our newsletter list but...

Without spam filters most of us would be drowning in junk mail and waste an insane amount of time trying to separate the good stuff from the junk. Later...

Hi Marti - Thanks for stopping by.  I agree that we need to filter spam - but need to do it at a level where we as the recipient have the choice - not blocked upstream by our provider and we never know about it....

Hi Tony,

I currently have msn.com and I know I miss emails.  I do not receive my incoming faxes from MyFax, I have to retrieve them from the website.  When I spoke to MyFax, they said this is a problem with both msn and cox and neither of them will fix it.

So, does anyone know of a good email provider that will not block legitimate email?

Doreen - We use GoDaddy.com for our domains and our email service.  So far no problems (that I know of).

Thanks Tony.  I have been hearing they are good.

I use ihouse to host my website and e-mail. If I discover an e-mail that hasn't gotten through, I check with them and have tht domain become "allowed" -- they have been very cooperative, like on everything else. But, they really have a very loose filter (which is good for the reasons mentioned in this post), so I also use Norton and Microsoft -- but I check the boxes where they sort junk, scanning the senders and headings to make sure I'm not missing anything.

Hi Ann,

What Tony is referring to is when the email never makes it to the recipient.  I bounces back to, or in some cases doesn't even notify the sender.  The latter is a problem I have with Cox email to me (@msn.com) sometimes I do not ever receive it and the sender is not notified.  As far as I know, it's not necessarily a 'problem', it's how they have their systems set up.  This is the information I was given by MyFax.

Tony, I was having trouble about 2 years ago. I switched to internetcrusade.com and have no problems since.

Missy - IC is a well respected vendor in the industry.  They also run the ePro program I believe - at epronar.com

Tony... this is a great point. Because even though I control my own spam to my e-mails, so does corporate. And I need to have a talk to them about some of my e-mails that I don't think that I have received. Great reminder...

I too use GoDaddy for my main e-mail and Outlook to filter my Spam.  That way I can go through the junk folder and check for accidents before I jettison and spams.

Also using MS Outlook and I look at Junk Email Subjects and Senders prior to deleting.

No idea if RoadRunner or directnic are filtering, but I seem to get a fair amount of junk.

Never thought of the stuff I may not be seeing...  Hmmm.

I like to see all of my email - even the ones from Nigeria asking me for help with a money transfer. It should be our decision to accept or reject an email message. If even one real one slips by it isn't worth it to have a filter.

Often, email sent from my barjdcommunications.com account won't get there.  It won't even get into the junk box.   I just had a local volunteer project pass from my hands to those of other volunteers.  For a minute they thought I was holding out on them for the passwords.  Come find out the password and the bill for their hosting that goes through my email never got to them.   I don't get a bounce notice, so it feels like the earth is still turning.

Coming this way, I put up with little nags all day because I have partially disabled my McAfee SpamKiller in order to not miss email.  I would rather sort the junk box than lose out.   It is easy to empty a few times a day.

Connie - I especially like the money transfer ones - law of averages says that one of these days they'll make a mistake and actually send the money! :-)

Judy - Better to be able to see it and decide rather than have a spambot make what could be a costly decision for you...
