Another post well worth re-blogging by Jeff Dowler!
Knowing how your prospects find you is important. Whether it's from print, on-line activity, or other means there is tremendous value in understanding how your marketing and visibility, or lack of, are working.
Do YOU know how they found you?
It's not always easy to determine, and I am willing to bet many folks don't bother to ask. There are times when I don't, or I don't query enough to really understand if what I am doing to generate business is, in fact, working. That's not smart. My bad.
There are lots of ways for buyer and seller prospects to find you - here are a few:
- Open Houses
- by referral from friends, family members or past and current clients
- on the Internet (that IS why we are all here writing blog posts, isn't it?) - our blogs on ActiveRain and elsewhere, Facebook, Twitter, our websites
- sign calls
- out in the community
- networking groups
- just posted flyers and postcards
- email campaigns
I had a call the other day from someone out of state who is relocating here and found my video tour of Route 101 in Carlsbad. Cool!
Google searches, long tail or short tail, yield many leads, with folks ending up on our blogs or more traditional IDX websites. But I've found that often when you ask "how did you find me" consumers have a hard time describing exactly how they got to me, other than "I found you on the Internet." You too?
You might ask...what does it matter HOW they found me? They found me, so who cares?
ROI is one reason you might care.
It's simple math - spending money on marketing drains profits, so if certain marketing is not yielding results, it's money down the drain. If you can't or don't track the results of marketing and advertising, the question of your spending efficiency is unanswerable.
And why continue to do something that isn't working and costs you money?
Will everything you do be successful? Probably not. Some marketing is geared toward overall visibility, not just generating a client, and there's value to that.
The Internet provides a myriad of ways to market and advertize for free or low cost. Of course nothing is ever totally free - there's the investment of personal time and effort.
Check out this video on Socialnomics - you'll be impressed. Especially if you are of the mind set that social media isn't worth the effort!!
There are lots of metrics out there these days to help figure out the traffic you are getting and where it's coming from, as one example.
So let's hear how YOU track your marketing and advertising.
Consider this a sharing opportunity to help educate folks on how to better monitor their on-line and off-line marketing.
