TEXTING has become an increasingly quick, easy, and convenient way for many to communicate in this fast-paced world these days.
As each month goes by, more and more clients of mine decide to 'shoot me a text' with a quick answer, or they ask me to do the same.
Now as convenient as this is, there are still some things that we should remember so that we can at least keep as much professionalism as we can, while using this communication source !
... a few things I like to keep in mind !
- Watch how many abbreviations you use !!
While it may be 'cool' to reply to your kids with "Gr8 ! C U @ hm 4 dinna arnd 6!" It may not come across as 'cool' to your clients if you reply in the same abbreviated manner !
Of course it all depends on your relationship with your clients, and maybe they text like that, but dont get caught texting like that to a client who cant decipher what you wrote, and subsequently loses a little love for ya !
- Texting is fast, but not so fast that spelling errors are acceptable !!
In the same manner that too many abbreviations can make you look less professional, texting so fast that you make typos or spelling errors, is also less professional ! Be careful, especially if you are in a rush !
- Lastly ... "Sorry, WHO IS THIS ????"
Ah ! Here's the tie-in to my TITLE !!!!!
Even though you may think that as soon as you give a new person your cellphone number that they rush to their address book in their phone and program you in immediately - the truth is that many times they still just dial your cell number a few times before you get programmed ! With that in mind, if you are sending them a short note at a random time during the day, be aware that although you may have their name on the top of your screen as you type them a text, it may appear on their phone as:
"201-481-2891 - 'Call me asap' I need to ask you something"
If they haven't programmed your name in, they may not recognize your cell number, and it often creates an uncomfortable second when they have no clue who is asking them to call them, and they have to waste time texting back "WHO IS THIS????"
So a better option is often something more like "Hi Mike, its Sheldon, I found some more info for you. Call me when you can."
... or something similar ! ... at least they know who it is then :o)
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE texting, and the major benefit is that is is super quick and easy, but sometimes taking the extra 6.2 seconds to type an additional few characters can make a difference to your rep ! ;o)
BTW, I luv 2 abbrev wn txtg, bt only 2 th rght peeps!
