Another great post highlighting the dangerous things some people do in order to save the money up front. The long term cost of this type of thing could amount to far more than the cost of doing it right the first time!
I from time to time will run into work done by someone who is clearly not a professional tradesman. I usually refer to this person as Uncle Bob. One of the favorite projects I find done by Uncle Bob is wiring. Yes, that right wiring, as in electricity. I find plumbing too, but that's another story for another time.
I was inspecting a small cape style home the other morning and noticed what looked like a wire poking out of the foundation under the dryer vent. I walked closer and my eyes had not deceived me it was an electrical branch wire. A white wire. Why is the color important? White would indicate it is a 15 amp INDOOR wire.
This wire was buried into the ground. It is not made for this type of application. Secondly I should not see the wire leaving the house because it supposed to be inside a piece of conduit. Don't see any conduit.
The funny thing was the wire went to the detached garage. At the garage there was a piece of conduit coming from the ground to the garage wall.
When I finally got to inspecting the basement I found my white wire exiting through the foundation wall. Mortared into the wall. Along with the dryer vent, also mortared into the wall. This looks like an old window opening that Uncle Bob decided to fix. Judging by its close proximity to the ground it probably often leaked. So the repair was to mortar it closed. But first put the wire and dryer vent in the opening.
The wire will have to be removed and replaced from the garage (about 40 feet away) to the house with outdoor rated wire. Inside conduit where required. As for Uncle Bob my advice is don't let him work on your house, instead hire a professional.
