"If your iPhone or Blackberry goes off at night, don't get up and check it. Better yet, turn off your phone at night"- Sage advice - there has to be some boundaries!
By Warren McNeil,
Do you think you are spending too much time doing social media? I am a real estate agent so one of the things I need to do each day is meet new people and social media helps me achieve that. However there is a downside to it. Sometimes I spend too much time just looking at updates that make me unproductive or take me away from doing more important things. If self control is not maintained, then we could be up late at night tweeting or reading status updates. I have met people through social media so I know it is a great way for me to reach out and help people.
I can remember when I was younger we were told not to watch too much TV or stop playing video games all of the time. Skip ahead to 2010 and now I am sure parents are telling their kids to stop using social networks so much. I think social networking will be much harder to kick because of the way it is intregrated into society. It seems everybody is doing it. It is becoming as common as brushing your teeth or combing your hair.
In summary I think it is important to maintain some self control. Try and schedule your time and set a timer. If your iPhone or Blackberry goes off at night, don't get up and check it. Better yet, turn off your phone at night so it doesn't make any noice. Some people even suggest to not use social networking over the weekend. The benefit will be more quality time with your family or yourself.
