Tony and Suzanne Marriott's Phoenix Arizona Real Estate Blog

It's about time.....

I'm a sort of "live and let live" individual.  If it's not illegal and it's not harming me, I really don't care that much what others choose to do.

I do anticipate that in a forum composed supposedly of professional adults, that the "norm" is going to be responsible, professional, behavior.  It's a shame, in a way, that Jonathan Washburn was compelled to write

ActiveRain Community Guidelines

to reinforce what should be obvious to any responsible, professional, adult.

Yeah, we're always going to have the cliques who shun those who aren't "in with the in crowd" and focus on public displays of backslapping and metaphorically grovelling at the feet of their most sacred VIP of the day/week/month (if the shoe fits....) - and that's fine - that sort of behavior might sway someone still mentally in grade school.

Special Interest Group

Here is a logic "flowchart" for all the SIGs (Special Interest Groups) to be found officially or unofficially on Active Rain, for their review, consideration and commentary:

Matt, Ben, James, Caleb and Jonathan make the decisions.

They decide to award points for activities they consider critical to the success of Active Rain and Localism.

Points are awarded for more than "blogging" - and like it or not - that's the way it is.

Points from all avenues are included in one overall "bucket" for each member.

The more points a member has the more visibility a member has - not only in comparative internal Active Rain Member rankings - but most importantly, to the consumer. (The internal stuff really doesn't matter - at least from a business perspective).

Visibility to the consumer translates into additional opportunities to connect with that consumer, and to generate business and revenue as a result.  (That was a supposition on my part when I joined, and a real life after the fact observation).

Those of us here that are focused on visibility, connecting with consumers and generating revenue do not need, nor are they expected to, have a Masters in Journalism or to be able to write at that "level".

As a consumer, would I rather have a real estate transaction handled:

A. Excellently by a Broker who doesn't specialize as a budding author on the side, but is able to put an adequate string of words together to write sentences that are understood

or

B. Adequately by a Broker who specializes as a budding author on the side, and is able to put an excellent string of words together to write sentences that are understood, acclaimed, lauded, etc.

Personally, given a choice, I choose A.

And for those who would suggest:

C. Excellently by a Broker who specializes as a budding author on the side, and is able to put an excellent string of words together to write sentences that are understood, acclaimed, lauded, etc.

or

D. Adequately by a Broker who doesn't specialize as a budding author on the side, but is able to put an adequate string of words together to write sentences that are understood

I humbly suggest that while A or C is an excellent choice by any consumer for a real estate transaction, the ability to write like a budding author is irrelevant to the actual real estate transaction.

I see a significant amount of "subjectivity" here on Active Rain - "I like your blog, therefore I like you", or "I like you, therefore I like your blog". I refer back to the first paragraph:

I'm a sort of "live and let live" individual.  If it's not illegal and it's not harming me, I really don't care that much what others choose to do.

I know we've seen some commentary recently about "what Bloggers shouldn't do in their blogs" - but we have many more comments that say "Great Post......." than we do that say "Horrible Post....."!  I suspect that most of us are in our comfort zone to praise in public, but hesitate to criticize in public.  Human nature.

(This post is totally unrelated to Joe Zekas.  While I disliked his method of delivery, he made very specific and valid points. "And oh by the way" the EHO logo has been on my profile page since the day I joined - can you say the same?)

Why then are the folks who are so focused on the quality of Blog posts (subjectively in my opinion) so quick to criticize those that contribute (and earn points and visibility) to Active Rain and Localism?

Each time I ask this question, the silence is deafening.

So I'm going to suggest a generic answer.

The folks that are focused solely on their perception of quality of blogs believe that Active Rain is their monarchy, and that anyone who chooses another path on Active Rain with a specific goal in mind should be shunned as a potential usurper and be treated like an outcast.

Agree?  Disagree?  Bite back your tongue?  Doesn't matter to me.  My mission has been to increase visibility to the consumer and be constructive while doing so, and thereby increase business contacts and transactions.  For the amount of time and effort invested to date in Active Rain and Localism, that goal has been surpassed by anything I could have hoped for.  The ROI is astounding!  I know others have seen similar results.  I hope more do.

IMHO we are not here to grade papers in an English class.

I am here to contribute, not criticize.

I am here to help myself and others become more successful.

I am here to connect with consumers and provide excellent real estate experiences in Arizona residential real estate.

How about you?

Kaye - Just finished watching the Disney fireworks from our Anaheim Hilton hotel room.  Probably a lot prettier than what we may see here!

I think different people are here for different reasons.  When I got here I thought it was a great place to network since I work for a small independant and have sent out referrals in the past - and got lucky with that crap shoot I might add!  I also enjoy the knowledge of wealth that is shared between real estate professionals.

I accidentally tripped and fell upon the consumer side of the equation - face first I might add.  That's a good thing!

It's not hard to get tied up in cliques or to relate to one professional over another.

Tony, Know it or not you are very Literate! I think you thought out and composed your blog very well. With points well taken.

Tony, I commend you for writing this and look forward to the comments.

This part had me laughing:  IMHO we are not here to grade papers in an English class.  Not because it's wrong, but because I've seen lots of errors (not typos) on some of the highest ranked blogs.  I've never wanted to correct anyone's grammar. I'm here for the content and I'm getting it!

My experience is so far a lot like Renee's.  I came here to network, completely unaware of the consumer side.  I got lucky too.

Congrats on this.  I think you already know I like your style.

Hey Tony, Good stuff. I'm with you live and let live. I'm on the opposite side of the spectrum from you since I pretty much just blog and don't really do much on the Localism side(even though I have built my particular market). But who cares. Do what you do. Stick to your game plan and everythinng else will take care of it's self.

Renee - I totally agree.  Different folks are here for different reasons.  I just find it mind boggling when some folks that are here for one reason want to be overtly condescending or critical of others who are here for other reasons.  The information exchange is great.  The networking is great.  Active Rain is great!

Maggie - Thanks for the support.  I've seen the typos too - and probably made some myself!

Bryant - Your blogs are interesting and IMHO well written.  I learn from them.  I don't think I have ever seen you be critical of others who are here - instead you are very supportive.  It is folks like you who truly make a difference!  Thanks for the support!

Tony- Like Rene I first thought it was all about networking and learning from people who knew more then I did on blogging.. I'd been involved on Real Talk for a long time and thought this might be a similar idea exchange without all the agency and EBA stuff.

I think what's happening with the consumer side could turn out to be a great resource for many of us.  The more my face gets out there the better it is for me.  If the only idea I picked up was seeing how Jeff Dowler used the Real Estate Showcase tours to promote his communities.. I'm way ahead of the competition.

Grammar.. schmamar... If you spend 2 hours editing what you write you will never get anything else done..  however spell check helps a lot and being an ex-teacher I admit the spelling errors do jump out at me.. often I find my errors are a matter of my fingers getting ahead of my brain.. or is it the other way around?

As for the cliques..  it's a community... this will always happen in a community.. some people like you and some don't and some only like each other.. that's how the real world operates.

I read as many articles as I can and comment on most of them...I appreciate it when people comment on something I've written but truthfully I only look at original material that is of interest to me.  If you ripped off an article from Realtor.org or just copy/paste etc I will pass.. If you post 15 articles in a row I will pass as I know you didn't write them yourself... point hounds have another agenda..

What I like is that I'm finding my blogging voice and am making changes to my other blog which I hope will be a big boost for me..

I won't be one of the in crowd but I'm meeting a lot of people and learning a bunch of new things that I would never have known about if not for this group.  That said I think I think I'll post another Blonde Joke..

Tony - I'm pretty much Live and Let Live, too.  Your three goals work well, but I'll modify them a bit (for me, of course):

I am here to contribute AND LEARN, not criticize.  (It's easy to push the back button or scroll down)

I am here to help myself and others become more successful.

I am here to connect with consumers AND AGENTS AND INDUSTRY PRACTITIONERS and provide excellent real estate experiences in FLORIDA residential real estate.

OK, so you were more concise!

I like your blogs, but that is not the only reason I like you.  I like the fact that you are good at what you do and are willing to share with others to help raise them up to the next level.

I look forward to seeing you and Suzanne in Hawaii next year at the CRS Sell-a-bration.

Randy - I really enjoyed meeting you in Las Vegas and having the time to talk - not only about real estate but about chess as well!  On another note - did you hear that the boxes with the pre-registrations went astray on their way back to CRS HQ?!

Tony, maybe I'm missing something and not reading enough posts. Not certain what you mean:

So far - I haven't seen any of the "Usual Suspects" comment on this

Don't name names but could you tell me what problems you are referring to.

Posted by Tim Maitski, Truth, Excellence and a Good Deal (Atlanta Communities Real Estate Brokerage) over 12 years ago

Tim,

There are some members out there who seem to delight in bashing other AR members for receiving points for activities other than Blogging.  I've seen it on a number of blog posts - and alluded to on many others.  Sometimes you'll see a string of comments which in the real world would come across as "snickers" - and I don't mean the candy bar!

It baffles me as to why the folks involved would think that any "good" would come out of that behavior - but am willing to listen - should they care to explain!  And - no - you are certainly not one of the "Usual Suspects" and I won't be naming names - unless of course someone is silly enough to send hatemail or hate-voicemail my way - then I'll just "publish" it!

Rob,

You hit the nail on the head - good job!  The behavior of the "in" crowd speaks volumes about themselves - not about others.  I don't think there is any personal likes or dislikes involved - just the issue they have with members earning points for anything other than the sacred "blog"!

Posted by Tony and Suzanne Marriott, Associate Brokers, Serving Scottsdale, Phoenix and Maricopa County AZ (Haven Express @ Keller Williams Arizona Realty) over 12 years ago

Tony,

It has amazed me since the beginning (my beginning at AR:) to see all the hurt feelings, jibes, outright mean spiritedness that has transpired here and probably by the same people who tout all the "Good" ways to treat people!

However, I have also seen some amazing people write some amazing blogs. Friendships have been forged by people who would have probably never met if not for Active Rain. The Community style that is offered by Active Rain has allowed people who have never written a public sentence, the opportunity to develop themselves.

I must say, I am surprised this post wasn't featured. Must have been inadvertently missed and which is why I am here 3 days later reading it.

Anyway, Active Rain will go on and still award points for stuff. You have to admit it was a great way to get people on this site! And it's still working. Someone had a great idea!

I found this from a link on your comment on Brian's post.  I'm amazed this was never featured.  With 20,000 people here, unless it is featured it is easy to miss.  I have a feeling, had it been featured, you would have gotten a ton of comments.

Tony:

I've never understood who 'defines' the in crowd.  It's perception only.  Even in high school.  I must be obtuse, blind, dumb or all three.  I appear to entirely miss these things that happen.  I do have to say, I have made a comment that a blogger didn't like (here on AR) and boy was that person a BWA with a capital B.  People seem to like that persons posts too.  That person sure doesn't like to be contradicted though.  Too bad.  Instead they like to illicite sympathy (aka you have to love me) with posts about 'bad' things in their life.  BLECH.

Posted by Christina Ethridge (The North Idaho Dream Team powered by SKE Realty Group) over 12 years ago

We missed the registration cutoff - couldn't do Suzannne's online as she had not attended this year - and no way to confirm Alii Tower was still available - will put on my list for the next couple of weeks.
