The Most Satisfying Things About Our Role As Brokers

This our entry for the February 2017 Challenge: What I Love About My Job sponsored by Liz and Bill Spear.

There are many things to love about our role as real estate brokers.

  • No more flying roundtrip 2 or 3 times per week domestic and international for Corporate America

  • No daily commute to a bricks and mortar office (unless you count the journey from the kitchen to our home offices)

  • No 9am to 5pm schedule - which in real life when you are salaried equates sometimes to 24/7

Those are some of the reasons we decided to exit Corporate American and enter the real estate arena.

So what have we loved about our experience in the real estate arena?

The satisfaction of closing our first listing, which was a referral from someone in the world of signed first edition fiction who knew and trusted us with a referral to their family member.

The satisfaction of building a team of (at one point in the roaring 2005 and 2006 market) fourteen listing and buyer agents.

Most of all, the satisfaction of helping more than 100 homeowners avoid foreclosure by helping them through the short sale process.

Within the short sale process, turning an initial "no" from a front line employee to a "yes" from "C" level executives at the lenders who saw the financial wisdom of accepting the short sale contract, and did not allow their "confused" front line employees' egos to interfere with what was best for the investor, the homeowner, and all else concerned.

Helping homeowners avoid foreclosure has been and is the most satisfying aspect of our career in real estate.

Although Short Sales are much fewer these days than when we had 29 of them going simultaneously, they still exist - in fact we are helping a couple of homeowners with one right now!

We have one of the approval letters already, and expect the second one this week!

Such a wonderful way to help others, Tony and Suzanne Marriott, Associate Brokers!  I had to learn short sales during the recession as well and learning all of the ropes (including going to the higher level executives too!!), I so enjoyed helping them avoid foreclosure.  You're right - it is so rewarding!  Now, we have very few short sales in Charlotte and I don't do them often at all.  I think I had one last year!

Great post and I love your passion for helping others!

I agree, short sales, while frustrating during the process, ultimately turned out to be some of the most satisfying transactions of my career. I really felt like an advocate for the client. They aren't very common in my market anymore.

Hi Suzanne and Tony -- it's that helpful attitude that has served you well.   The satisfaction for a job well done and acknowledge cannot be measured in dollars.

It really is because we care !! The satisfaction is helping people and the benefit is we get paid. I used to tell people when I sold a house "Thank you for dealing with me because this is how i feed my children!" Now I tell them it's how I pay them. (Both my daughters work with me !!) All the best from Nova Scotia.
